From about 1949 through to 1962 Stanley produced a secondary line of non-adjustable hand planes. Presumably these were geared towards those who didn’t want all of the fiddly little adjustments common to most any other plane. By design this could be seen as a fail on Stanley’s part because by making these planes non-adjustable, it meant to the user needed to have the skill to line up the iron where they want it, set the lever cap, and either start the process over again to get the desired results or resort to tapping the iron with a mallet.
These are described as:
Bottoms are grey iron castings, ground true. Cast iron frog an integral part of the bottom and furnishes rigid support for the cutter. Tempered tool steel double plane iron. Black finish with sides and bottom ground. Red hardwood handles and knobs.

The Defiance 1244 is a smoother with a length of 9 inches and a 2 inch cutting iron and weighing 2 and 1/2 pounds.
